Thank you for the comments, Genevieve. My goal here was to illustrate the North West Coast Native American moral tale of Salmon Boy. Sorry, I do not know the Native American name for the tale. I also wanted to honor the artistic style of the people who produced the story without copying directly. In the story, the naughty boy falls into the river and is turned into a fish....but he was still a boy on the inside. That is why I chose to illustrate this story in the way I did. I am very please with how this turned out.

Love these fish! So creative! vf Like how one looks like a human and all the eyesore pointed at it. Very clever.

Thank you so much AnnaJo! I looked at a lot of Northwest Coast Native Art work and tried a number of different approaches before I finally hit on this version....and I love this one so much that I have it hanging in my bedroom.

Artist's Description

Salmon Boy is based on a Native American tale from the Northwest Coast region. In this story, the boy is being disrespectful towards the spirits of the salmon that have given their lives to feed his family. The part I chose to represent in this painting is just after he has fallen into the river and been turned into a salmon to teach him a moral lesson.

About Melinda Dare Benfield

Melinda Dare Benfield

My passion for art came naturally from both sides of my family tree. However, most of my early inspiration and training came from my father who was gifted in many media. I also acquired a keen interest in history, anthropology, archaeology, and nature from my father. For me, art is a way of exploring the wide and diverse world and expressing myself within it. As a result, I work with a variety of media in a diverse number of styles, often simultaneously. Unfortunately, my curiosity and diverse interests often means that many pieces of art get left incomplete...or that I end up finishing pieces years after I began them. It also means that I have a tendency to dabble in experimental methods, materials, or subjects...
