Thank you, Genevieve. I gave this series as a homework assignment to myself to distract from my father's recent death, the loss of a wanted unborn child, my recent cross-ocean flight from a failed marriage, and my mother's ongoing battle with cancer. It employed my background in Anthropology, History, and Art while keeping my hands busy. There is more to do along this line so I may have to come back to this series....

Artist's Description

In the color version of Sacred Scarab, I was trying to capture the contrast between light and dark, solid and flimsy, ...etc. I used a metallic copper colored paint for the solar disk and the giving hands which obviously lost it's luster in the scanning process and appears a kind of copper-brown.

About Melinda Dare Benfield

Melinda Dare Benfield

My passion for art came naturally from both sides of my family tree. However, most of my early inspiration and training came from my father who was gifted in many media. I also acquired a keen interest in history, anthropology, archaeology, and nature from my father. For me, art is a way of exploring the wide and diverse world and expressing myself within it. As a result, I work with a variety of media in a diverse number of styles, often simultaneously. Unfortunately, my curiosity and diverse interests often means that many pieces of art get left incomplete...or that I end up finishing pieces years after I began them. It also means that I have a tendency to dabble in experimental methods, materials, or subjects...
